Wedding mornings aren’t just about the bridal suite and makeup brushes (unless thats your thing), the groom’s prep has its own energy, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Whether it’s sharing a toast with your mates, tying your tie for the tenth time, or double-checking the rings, groom prep is where the anticipation and excitement truly kick in. The Groom’s Guide is there for insight above all. If you need help at all whatsoever just reach out to me using the contact button below.

WHY GROOM PREP PHOTOS MATTER?

Groom prep photographs matter as they give a second perspective to the story. I normally would spend about half an hour if not less on the boys as the key moments are made with some subtle direction. Though ofcourse, if you want more time I would recommend one of my second shooters to come in, and spend some more time to get those little moments and finer detail shots. Another excellent reason is if you’re having your prep in your family home, its special and precious to you. Also, if youre heart is set on getting a wedding album, this will help balance things out on the spreads.

Choosing the right location

Where you get ready on the morning of your wedding can make a big difference to the atmosphere and the photos. Your family home is a special place, filled with memories from where you grew up. Having your prep there adds a personal touch and allows me to capture details that mean something to you.

If you’d prefer something a little easier, there are plenty of other great options, a stylish hotel, a cosy Airbnb, or even a room at your wedding venue. If you’re getting married at a country house, for example, having your prep there keeps travel to a minimum and frees up more time for a drink with the boys before the ceremony.

TIME IT WELL

Your groom prep will run smoothly when it’s timed well with your wedding photographer. I’ll always give you an approximate arrival time, let you know what to have ready, and make sure we’ve covered all the key details you want photographed, plus a few of my own must-have shots that deserve a place in your story.

We’ll set up a timeline that works alongside the bridal preparations, especially if you’ve opted to have just me on the day. That way, we can keep everything relaxed, unhurried, and full of good craic for the time we’ve got together.

Get your details ready

Before I arrive, it’s a good idea to have all your key details laid out in one spot, suit, tie, shoes, cufflinks, watch, aftershave, and belt. If you’re the one holding the rings, keep them close by too. Having everything ready means we can get straight into photographing those finer touches without any last-minute searching, and it also makes for beautifully styled shots that tell the full story of your morning.

THE LADS

Your wedding morning doesn’t have to be all about getting dressed and waiting around, make it an experience. Plan a toast with your groomsmen, break out a deck of cards, shoot a quick game of pool, or just enjoy some laid-back banter. These moments aren’t just fun; they’re brilliant for capturing genuine laughter and camaraderie, giving your wedding gallery a real sense of the friendships that matter most to you. Though, during the pictures, if you need any help with guidance, just let me know. I will throw in a few tricks too.

Keep things calm

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the morning, but keeping things calm makes all the difference. Start with a proper breakfast (yes, really, you’ll thank yourself later), and have someone you trust double-check the travel plans so there’s no last-minute panic.

If you are freaking out and need help quick, seriously, grab a rescue remedy. These help massively with your nerves. I know that its great to have a drink the night before to celebrate, but go easy if you are hangover prone, a wedding day ahead is serious stuff, and we want you in tip top shape for your big day, plus your partner-to-be will kill you. A relaxed morning means you can enjoy the moment, stay present, and set the tone for the rest of the day.

THE GROOM’S GUIDE…

Over the years, I’ve seen how groom prep sets the tone for the rest of the day. It’s a chance to slow down, take it all in, and have some genuine, unposed moments that you’ll treasure just as much as the ceremony. When I photograph groom prep, I focus on those in-between moments, the handshake before heading out, the smile you give your mum or dad, the laughter when someone can’t fold a pocket square or pin-holes. Those are the memories you’ll love looking back on.

If you’re planning your wedding in Northern Ireland or Donegal, I’d love to capture your story from the very first toast to a few dances in. Get in touch to check your date and let’s talk about how we can tell both sides of your wedding day.

HEY, I’M JAMES, THE GUY BEHIND THE CAMERA.

__

A documentary-style wedding photographer based in Derry, with an eye for genuine moments and a knack for making even the camera-shy crack a smile. I picked up a camera in 2014 to document my wee girl growing up, and by 2017, I was capturing weddings—now there’s nothing I love more. I’m all for the relaxed romantic & the fun-loving couples who want their wedding photographs to bring them right back to how it all felt.

We are so incredibly grateful to have had James Aiken as our wedding photographer! From the very beginning, it felt like we were working with an old friend—he made us feel completely at ease, which allowed us to be ourselves and truly enjoy every moment. His warm personality, calm presence, and genuine enthusiasm added so much fun to our day. James has an incredible eye for detail and a talent for capturing the real, candid moments that made our wedding so special. Every photo feels alive—full of emotion, laughter, and love. Looking through our gallery brought us right back to the day. We honestly can’t recommend James enough. He didn’t just take beautiful photos—he helped create memories we’ll carry forever.

Since booking James last year he has been fantastic. From having pre engagement shoots to give us a taster what was in store to the big day, to the lead up grabbing a coffee and sitting down to see exactly what we wanted and making sure he captured it all. James certainly did that and more, he was amazing to work with and made everyone feel so at ease throughout the day, we enjoyed the craic! We received our sneak peak during the wedding and they speak for themselves they turned out incredible we could not of asked for better! Thank you so much for everything James you were amazing.

– CATHERINE & KIAN –

A wedding is a day you never want to forget so we knew how important the photography was going to be. It did not take us long to decide to contact James Aiken to request his amazing service. My wife spent a considerable amount of time looking through all the amazing photos he has available on his social media and we knew that he would not disappoint. To say we were overjoyed would be an understatement! James was helpful throughout the entire process from first contact, meeting for the first time in person to discuss the plan for the day and giving us a stress free experience.
